EXAKT Study (ICNARC)

The EXAKT Study, led by the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre (ICNARC), is a pioneering clinical study investigating the reliability of pulse oximeters in measuring blood oxygen levels across various skin tones. This study aims to address concerns regarding potential biases in these devices, particularly their accuracy in individuals with darker skin tones, to provide crucial insights into improving healthcare equity and addressing potential disparities in patient care. We collaborated with the EXAKT team to recruit members from Black and South Asian communities to their steering group and facilitated codesign sessions that have influenced their engagement strategies. We are currently working with them to build their communications plan and dissemination strategy once the findings become available in Autumn 2024.
